Batch PNG Padding — resize without cropping

Make a batch of images share one canvas size without cutting off their edges. This local Python tool shrinks each image only when needed, keeps its aspect ratio and centers it on a transparent PNG canvas.

Python 3.10+ and Pillow required. This is downloadable editable command-line source, not a graphical app or a done-for-you service. START-HERE.txt walks through setup and the original example.

Try the example

Extract the ZIP, install Pillow and run the included batch to a new 300x300 output folder. The 480x240 banner becomes 300x150 content centered on a 300x300 canvas. The small example stays small; the JPEG example has its EXIF orientation applied.

For your own images

One flat folder of 1-20 static PNG/JPG/JPEG files, each up to 2048 pixels per side and 16 MiB. Choose one target width and height from 1 to 2048. Pad creates exact-size RGBA PNG canvases; fit only shrinks within the target and does not add padding. No enlargement, cropping or stretching.

All outputs are PNG. Filename stems remain; JPEG extensions become .png. PNG alpha is carried through resampling; opaque content stays opaque. EXIF orientation is applied, other metadata omitted. Embedded ICC profiles, CMYK, unsupported color modes, animation, corrupt files and filename collisions reject. Originals stay unchanged; the output folder must be new.

Open the results and read the report. This changes pixels when resizing; it is not enhancement, background removal, lossless copying, print-color preparation or a DPI guarantee. The checkerboard appears only in the preview image.

Developed with AI-assisted scripting and reviewed synthetic examples. Runs locally without network calls; installing Pillow downloads a separate dependency. Local use/modification and commercial outputs allowed; source/bundle redistribution prohibited. Dependencies retain their own licenses. No warranty.
